Zenith 5-G-442 Tombstone (1940)
(wood tube tombstone radio w/SW)

Zenith 5-G-442 Tombstone (1940)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

When it comes to Zenith table radios, one thinks they have seen most of them, and then one pops up you have never seen. There were three radios produced using the five-tube, 5539 chassis. They are referred to as "farm radios" as they use batteries; but in 1940, electricity was getting out to the rural areas of America, so it also utilizes 110VAC. There was another table radio and console radio that used this chassis. They are all new to me! This five-tube, (SB,SWx2) chassis is very sensitive and picks up a lot of stations across the dial. The short wave bands have been disabled and do not work. The radio has a 10-inch speaker and produces a lot of volume. We went through it, replacing all of the capacitors, checking tubes and resistors replacing them where needed. A safety fuse and new power cord were installed. Gary stripped and refinished the cabinet using high-quality toners, grain filler and lacquer. How about owning a rare Zenith that no one has...this is it! 18"H x 14"W x 12"D.
