Philco 80B "Philco Junior" (1932)
(wood tube cathedral radio)

Philco 80B "Philco Junior" (1932)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

There's something about the Philco cathedral radios that define the genre. They manufactured several different cathedrals, but the Philco 90 to me is the quintessential cathedral. Starting with the model 20, followed by the 90, 80, 70 and 60, they are all to this day sought after and highly collectable. Here today we have the smaller model 80B, known as the "Philco Junior." This was the entry level radio for Philco in 1932, priced at $18.75 with tubes! They sold over 200,000 units, prompting many other manufacturers to offer their own versions of an under $20 radio. This four-tube, AM only radio was a bare-bones design, but plays loud and clear across the dial. All the capacitors were replaced, tubes and out-of-tolerance resistors replaced where needed. A nice, new period-correct cloth cord was installed, and the original knobs went back onto this beauty. A reproduction Philco grille cloth was added. Gary refinished it with a nice satin tone. If you are looking for a Philco 80 to fill out your collection, this one would grace any shelf! 14"H x 12"W x 8"D.
