Zenith 5-R-317 "World's Fair Glass Rod" (1938)
(wood tube table radio)

Zenith 5-R-317 "World's Fair Glass Rod" (1938)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

A completely restored Art Deco Zenith that should be the centerpiece of every collection. It was designed to be part of Zenith's 1939 New York World's Fair exhibit, in all probability by Robert Budlong, one of Zenith's most prolific designers. The chassis is an AC powered superhet with five tubes and a power transformer. This was a beautifully designed radio positioned between the Great Depression and what was soon to erupt into WWII. It appeared in two 1942 movies, "Woman of the Year," and "Nazi Agent." The walnut case has been refinished in Mohawk lacquers, the twelve glass rods are perfect, as are the eleven gold painted wooden spacers. It has an original Deco dial and dial pointer, and a nice undamaged swirled Tenite dial escutcheon. There are five original push buttons, two original knobs, and a brand new reproduction back on the case. The chassis has been recapped and is playing well utilizing just a short antenna wire. Extra antenna wire will be included. Shipping $30 by UPS most everywhere in US. About 14"W x 8"H x 8"D (to left front of case).
