THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD! |
The Zenith 5-R-317 "Glass Rod" Art Deco radio was marketed as "The World's Fair Special," and introduced at the 1939 New York Worlds Fair. This is the five-tube version, which has a power transformer, instead of its six tube sister 6-D-317, which is an AC/DC set with a ballast tube. This may be the original finish, but if not it was restored very well (has a small blemish on top at back right side). It has been electronically restored to like new working condition. Glass rods and gold painted wooden rods appear to be original, and together with the gold grille cloth make for a very attractive and unusual radio. The dial bezel is original, as are the pushbuttons and knobs. In fact everything about this set is about perfect! The back is an excellent new reproduction. The paper tag on the cabinet bottom matches the metal tag on chassis back so the cabinet and chassis have always been together and not "cobbled" up. Aux input has been added and pushbuttons to select favorite stations work. Chassis pics available, just email me. Rather rare, it doesn't get much nicer than this. It would be a super addition to any collection, and should be featured in any Zenith collection! 14"W x 8-1/2"H x 8"D, shipping weight 13 pounds. |
