This ebony Bakelite Sonora is the redheaded stepchild we've heard so much about through the years. "Oh, he's only got four tubes, and, look how small. But, I understand he keeps great time and he's sooo handsome! Poor child." Yes, folks, he's been this way since 1954 when he was made. As you know, of course, he's been electronically reconditioned with new capacitors including electrolytics and all out of tolerance resistors have been replaced. The four tubes are strong. Decca DR-90 (1951)
Where do you start naming-dropping the artists that spent time on Decca Records: der Bingle, Ella, Andrew Sisters, Bill Haley, Paul McCartney, Luciano, Mills Bros., the Rolling Stones, etc.! Yep, even the Stones! The relationship between these artists and radio was synonymous with great music! And, a little known by-product in the U.S. was a really great looking black Bakelite clock radio (also in Plaskon)! This handsome little guy has been electronically reconditioned with new capacitors including electrolytics and all out of tolerance resistors have been replaced. The five tubes are strong. Trav-Ler 5051 (1948)
Yes sir, I'm a travelin' man and I've made a lot of stops all over the world! So the Ricky Nelson song goes. And, to follow the beat of the music we have a swirled chocolate brown Bakelite beauty from the far off radio company in the sky called, coincidentally, "Trav-Ler!" Ain't that a kick in the pants! Electronically reconditioned with new paper and electrolytic capacitors and out of tolerance resistors have been replaced. There is an external antenna wire for greater station sensitivity. Westinghouse H-448T4 (1955)
This cute lil' guy is made from Polystyrene (how may words do you know that has 2 'Y's in it) plastic that Westinghouse had a corner on with their radios in the mid-fifties. They are very nice four-tube radios that shine to beat the band... "if" they're in really good shape! This Westy qualifies 'ceptin' for the lil' bugger on the right side top (see pic). Everything else is a reflection. It plays really good and even has an external antenna connection that beefs up station sensitivity! Electronically reconditioned with new paper and electrolytic capacitors and all out of tolerance resistors have been replaced. The four tubes are in good shape. Emerson 426 Portable (1941)
The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are history for 2016 at least for this part of the country, but not for portable radio lovers! It's always summer to us! And, it's beach-able if you have the dry cell batteries. Of course, it's AC for home use, too. This beautiful brown Bakelite Emerson is in fabulous condition! The knobs are slightly warped, but old plastic does that. Electronically reconditioned and aligned with new paper and electrolytic capacitors. All out of tolerance resistors were replaced. Dumont RA346 Clock Radio (1956)
For those with an eclectic flare in radios I have the absolute livin' end! From '56 and the mad scientists at DuMont Labs - less the tail fins - comes this clock radio that demands attention and probably gets it most of the time! Gingerbread works, too! It plays really good as does the clock. The functions work smoothly! Electronically reconditioned, aligned with out of tolerance resistors replaced. Call me crazy, but I've made a concentrated effort of late to prepare mostly portable-type radios. You know, summer, beach, warm weather, etc.! Purpose: Run off the evil demons of winter! This beautiful faux leather Truetone is working...literally and figuratively! It's over 60 degrees, the sun is out and this portable is ready for summer!
