| If you're looking for a cathedral radio but don't have room for a large set, this small five-tube set is big on style, but not size. This example has been recapped, resistors checked and out of tolerance ones replaced. A strong tested set of tubes was installed, controls were cleaned and lubricated (volume control has a bit of scratchiness just before it clicks in the off position). Speaker was replaced due to the original having an open FC. It receives all of my local stations with a long wire antenna attached. Since the set has no AVC, the volume control is part of the antenna circuit, so the louder the volume, the stronger the stations will come in, but it will blast if you go from a distant station to a local station. It sounds reasonably well, typical of budget TRF's of the early 30s. Very strong local stations will sound a bit distorted due to over modulation. The cabinet was completely stripped and refinished using rich color spray toners and topped off with a light coat of clear enamel for durability. A new exact pattern grille cloth was installed. This is an early version of the model 167, using the 1932 model 148 cabinet. This set has AM/Police band (three knobs vs two on the model 148). Due to circuit design my usual 3.5mm aux cord could not be installed on this set. 14-1/4"H x 12"W x 8-1/2"D. |
