| Philco made a lot of "hippo" radios between 1946 and 1949 but by far the rarest and most desirable of them would have to be this one from the final run, final year of production, the model 49-900, Yes, the normally dark brown marble swirl cabinet was molded in solid black Bakelite! Nothing was painted. And the cabinet is in very nice condition, too, with no cracks. Even the knobs are one year only, molded in solid black plastic. I've encountered many hippos in my years of collecting but this is the very first 49-900E I've ever acquired. The Philco "hippo" models have long been a favorite among collectors, because of their impressive lighted dial using an early form of fiber optic light diffusion through clear plastic. A very cool effect in a darkened room! This six-tube chassis has been gone through with all new filter and paper capacitors, strong tested set of tubes, new line cord, controls cleaned and lubricated. It plays strong across the AM band with its loop antenna, receiving all of my local stations. Or use the attached 3.5mm aux cord to play your own audio content through the radio. If you've ever wanted the rarest hippo ever produced, don't let this one pass you by. They don't turn up very often! 12"W x 7-1/2"H x 6-3/4"D. |
