RESTORATION PROCESS
Bob Atchison's Radio Attic
A word about my work: I restore radios the best I can while being as little invasive as possible.
EXTERIOR:
I try not to sand off veneer if at all possible. I chemically strip old
paint or finish if it is too far gone, but if it is still good I will restore it
with treatments available for that purpose. Painted Bakelite radios may
not be the original color. Radios from the 30's were usually white, black
or brown. Sometimes I paint them different colors because they look cool
that way. Bakelite radios that are painted could have repairs underneath
but the repairs are professionally done, are unnoticeable and very durable.
In this case the cabinet is guaranteed for a lifetime never to crack again at a
repair.
All radios shall be free of major cracks, chips, gouges, etc. unless
specified in the description. On unpainted plastic radios it is not
uncommon for slight scratches from many years of wear. These don't detract
from the appearance.
INTERIOR:
All chassis are completely gone through. All tubes are tested on a Hickok
TV-10 tester and weak ones are replaced. All capacitors are replaced with
fresh ones. Switches, mechanical joints and pots are cleaned and lubed.
Voltages are checked for accuracy. Cords are usually replaced. In
the case of AC/DC sets (no transformer) I use new cords with polarized plugs.
This is for added safety. Radios older
than 1938 will have reproduction cloth covered cords with original or repro
bakelite plugs. These look just as the originals. Safety caps are also installed in these radios
for further safety. These caps prevent an internal short from rendering
the chassis "hot." If the radio has a tuning eye tube it will have a new one. If a radio is modified by me in any way
permanently changing it from original it will be stated as so in the
description.
All radios are guaranteed to work for 30 days. If your radio fails within
that time simply contact me. I may ask a few questions then I will have
you send it back to me. I will either repair and return it or refund your
money, whatever I determine to be the best course of action.
Please feel free to contact me to ask about any radio regarding its condition,
shipping cost etc. or if you would like more photos I can email them to
you. You will be under no obligation until you send me an email of intent
as described above.
Terms and Conditions of Sale
Payment is gladly accepted via PayPal using the
email address below. You can pay via a major credit card with PayPal, NO
FEE to buyers and registration is free.
I also accept cashier's checks, money orders or personal checks sent to the
address above.
Personal checks will need three to four weeks to clear before I will ship.
I do not accept Western Union or any other wire transfer services.
Payment in full including all shipping and handling charges must be made before
I ship merchandise.
In the case of more than one interested party I will sell to the earliest email
that I get. To finalize a sale I must have an email from you stating your
intent to buy. Phone calls are great but for documentation I need the
email with a time stamp. Your email to me stating you intend to buy XXX
make, XXX model constitutes a sale. I will reply with a PayPal invoice
which will include the shipping and handling charges and a total. If you
prefer sending payment via snail mail, that is fine, just print out the invoice
and include it with your payment. When I receive it I will cancel the
PayPal invoice.
Payment must be received in full within seven (7) days of the sale or the radio
will be sold to anyone else waiting in standby or it will go up for sale again.
I can't waive this rule. These radios often become so popular that on eBay
the prices go through the roof with bidding frenzies. I am keeping the
prices reasonable by not putting them in an auction format so please respect the
terms herein. If you are an international buyer and you are sending money
via mail please use express airmail.
Local pickup is fine on weekends or evenings. I live about 40 miles
southeast of Seattle, WA. Call me or make arrangements via email etc.
before committing to sale.
For local pickup I will not accept checks. You can
use cash or prepay using PayPal.
Handling charges will be only to cover the cost of packing materials. (no
handling charge for local pickup) You pay actual UPS, FEDEX GROUND or FEDEX HOME
DELIVERY only.
I will gladly sell to anyone in the world as long as you are willing to pay the
shipping. All shipping not in the contiguous United States shall be via
insured USPS Priority Mail only. You will need to contact me for a quote
on the shipping to your country. Also, I only speak English so please
don't call or email me in another language.
Handling charges are thus:
$5.00 for table radios under 15 lbs.
$10.00 for radios 15-25 lbs (minimum for all glass radios)
$15.00 for radios 25-30 lbs.
Note: Repeat customers will not be charged any handling fees for
radios under 30 lbs (just a little thank you for coming back).
Any radio over 30 lbs including all chairsides and consoles will need to be
quoted on an individual basis. Please contact me before you commit to the
purchase. I will do all I can to keep these costs reasonable.
Radios are always double boxed and well packed. I have not lost one in
over 500 shipments of radios in over ten years.
